Hi, I’m Brian (Smallwood). I co-founded Sero performance, along with Frank Nelson. My family, (wife- Sharon, son- Shawn, daughter- Kristin) has enjoyed living in Camarillo for over 30 years. During that time, I have been involved at a high competitive level as both an athlete and coach in sports ranging from basketball and soccer, to ping-pong and tennis. I settled into multisport competition in 1994, and quickly developed a love and passion for the spirit within the sport. Over the 14 years I have been involved with the sport, I have improved gradually from a complete novice, to multiple Ironman World Championship qualifications and a top 10 national age group ranking.
Coaching has allowed me to combine my passions for research and teaching, to help others achieve the consistent improvements I have been blessed with.

Hi, my name is Frank Nelson. I was born and raised in Ventura, CA. Caught the triathlon bug in 1989 while attending college in San Luis Obispo, CA. (Where I now live). Since then it has become a passion. I especially enjoy watching the body respond and improve while following sound training programs. Equal to my passion for competing has been sharing it with others. Helping others reach their athletic goals is incredibly rewarding.

Hello, my name is Tony Pedeferri. I started out as a cyclist where I eventually became a Category 1 road racer and Category 2 track cyclist. My interest in triathlon began in high school when I worked in a multi sport shop with Tom Price who won Ironman Canada in 1985 and 1987. However, between college and work I didn’t start triathlon racing until 1999. When competing I was mainly focused on long distance and Ironman races. My first year I signed up for two Ironman races (didn’t know what I was in for). Despite the tough first year schedule, I finally figured it out at Ironman Florida with a 9:36 finish along with the fastest amateur bike split by over 5 minutes. I have finished a total of 10 Ironman races with 3 Ironman Hawaii finishes. I have dipped under 10 hours four times with a best of 9:36. I am turning to coaching after competing in triathlons for the last nine years. I am a California Highway Patrol Officer for the last 13 years. However, on December 19th 2007, I was involved in multiple car collision. I was standing on the right side of a stopped car on the freeway when we were both hit by a driver under the influence of a few different drugs which left me nearly dead in ditch. After 7 months in the hospital, I came out of it as a paraplegic (T-1 spinal cord injury) and paralyzed from the upper chest down. I want to give back what I have learned throughout my career and my knowledge of how to be the best you can be for that one big race.

Howdy! I’m Dan, but you can also call me by my callsign, “Frosty”. I have had the honor of serving you as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Navy since 1990. I had fully established a career of being launched from, and landing on, aircraft carriers by the time that I branched out my thrill-seeking into triathlons. Though I am Northern Californian by birth, my Naval career has afforded me the opportunity to live and race triathlons throughout North America and Europe. The experiences that I have had and the wise guidance that I received from coaches helped me advance from average person to professional triathlete at the age of 37. I am excited to combine my many years of Naval leadership experience with my knowledge of triathlon’s many facets in order to lead anyone, within the full spectrum of talent and desire, to achieve lofty dreams and goals.
Details: Bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy. USAT Level 1 certification. American Swim Coaches Association Level 2 (Masters) certification. Previous vice president of the Masters Aquatic Coaches Association. Coached by Ironman triathlete Eric Hodska. Eight-time Ironman finisher with two finishes at Kona. 20-time U.S. Masters Swimming Top-10 swimmer. USAT professional triathlete 2006-2008. Current member of the All-Navy and All-Armed Forces triathlon teams.
Hi there, my name is Jill Shaffer and I have lived and trained in Ventura for the past 26 years. I am married and have three “children” ages 23, 21, and 11. In fact, I’m a grandma (Reese, age 3)!! My athletic background started as a child growing up in the sport of gymnastics which allowed me to attend UC Berkeley on a full ride scholarship. As I graduated into the real world, I began running marathons which quickly lead to an introduction to this amazing sport of triathlon. Over the years, I’ve completed numerous marathons and Ironman distance triathlons, even qualifying for the “big dance” in Hawaii in 2001.
I was given the opportunity to run a City sponsored Kids Triathlon Class a few summers ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve spent the last 5 years coaching Age Group swimming with the Buenaventura Swim Club and I am certified as an ASCA Level 2 swim coach.
This sport has enriched my life tremendously over the years. I am looking forward to using my many positive experiences to give back in order to help others to achieve their dreams and expectations within this amazing sport of triathlon.

Hello my name is Jim Avrea. I'm the President and CEO of Aloha Steakhouse. My family, Wife Melissa, and two daughters, Mikayla and Kendall. We have lived in Camarillo For the past 8 years. I grew up surfing, skateboarding and bike riding all over the South bay. I was bitten by the triathlon bug 3 1/2 years ago. Triathlon has been very good to and for me. In the last 3 1/2 years I have lost 30 pounds and taken off 48 minutes from my half Ironman. My goal is to Qualify for Hawaii Ironman in the next couple of years, but most of all give back to those like me who knew nothing of the sport. I truely believe it is a life changing event. "Everyday there is something to be learned and everyday there is something to teach"
Hi there, my name is Mike Shaffer and I’m a swimmer who converted to the sport of triathlon a few years after graduating from college…and after putting on 30+ pounds by partaking in some of my favorite hobbies…eating, drinking beer, and watching sports on the couch. I’m a very competitive person, so racing in sporting events is what I like to do to quell those competitive juices. I have been a competitive swimmer since the age of 11 after efforts in baseball, wrestling, track, and band, yes I said band (trumpet), all fell short. Swimming was my life until the conclusion of the 1988 Olympic Trials (7th in 200m fly), but it also provided a college scholarship so I could obtain a degree and find a job after I hung up the suit. I didn’t stay away from the pool for too long, and picked up the sport of triathlon in 1990. So now I’ve been doing triathlons for 18 years and still enjoy being the “big sweaty target” for those fast runners.

Hi, I am Shigy. I started triathlon training to change my unhealthy lifestyle when I was 28. Before then I lead a very sedentary office workaholic and alcoholic lifestyle smoking 2 packs of cigarettes daily, dancing and singing all night long. When I finally decided to change my life, I could not even swim 25m. It took me a long while just to accomplish that. My first triathlon (olympic distance 1997) is still my most unforgettable race because at the time it was such a huge accomplishment. I still have the finishing T-shirt. As a beginner, there is truly a pure spirit and I always hope to sustain that.
My philosophy; Triathlon training is a life style!!! The competition comes secondary. My training method is more about the "art" of the sport rather than the "science." I enjoy training with aspiring athletes as well as accomplished athletes. I believe both of them can inspire each other. Today's elites had to start from somewhere. I enjoy the challenge of every race and every race brings a new experience to me.
My ultimate Goal; If I can stand on podium of Ironman Hawaii at 70-74, my triathlon life will be accomplished.
Details:Triathlete since 1986, Completed 80+ Triathlon races, 30+ Ironman distance. 9 Hawaii Ironmans, multiple marathons and Santa Barbara 9 trails
Hi, my name is Josh Spiker. I have been running since I was six years old and have been coached and mentored by some of the top coaches in the world and have trained with some of the best athletes in the world. I have been coaching individual athletes for the past two years. I believe there are many different ways to successfully train an athlete and the coaches job is to find what the athlete will best respond to. For example I believe in the benefits of lactate testing and heart rate training but acknowledge this will match the personalities of some athletes. For some running or triathlon is an escape, a time to think. They do not want to worry about heart rate and lactate levels...they just want to get out there and run based on feel. There is nothing wrong with this and I currently fit into this category. It can still benefit an athlete of this nature to hire a coach who can develop a training program to match the athletes personality.
